WINTER SKILLS & MUNRO’S

An ideal course for hillwalkers who want to learn the essential skills needed to enjoy winter walking. A number of Classic Munros will be climbed during the course. Good level of hillwalking fitness required.
The course will cover:
Basic snowcraft, use of ice axe and crampons, ice axe arrest
Ascent of some classic Munro Ridges
Winter mountain navigation and route planning
Winter weather and avalanche avoidance
Venue: Glencoe and Ben Nevis Range

WINTER WALKING & MUNRO’S

A continuation of the Winter Skills course. Aimed at those who have already gained the essential skills and simply want to enjoy walking in the winter hills under our expert guidance whilst consolidating their experience without the need to move onto steeper climbing terrain. Previous Experience:
Good level of fitness and confident use of axe and crampons. We operate the course from two venues and the final choice of routes will be chosen in conjunction with you.
Venue: Glencoe and Ben Nevis range.

WINTER MOUNTAINEERING

This course is ideal for the keen hill walker and scrambler who wants to progress and learn the essential skills of winter mountaineering. It differs from our winter walking course in that there is an emphasis on progression towards steeper ground and the use of ropes to ascend some classic grade l/ll gullies and ridges towards the end of the course. Previous Experience: Good level of fitness and the enjoyment of exposed ridges, roped climbing experience useful but not essential.
The course will cover:
Use of ice axe and crampons
Simple ropework and belaying
Snow & ice climbing skills and classic grade l/ll gullies and ridges.
Winter mountain navigation and route planning
Winter weather and avalanche avoidance
Optional overnight snow-holing expedition/journey (+£20)
Venue: Glencoe and Ben Nevis Range.

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR SCOTTISH WINTER COURSES

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Our Scottish winter courses will provide you with the skills to venture into the winter mountains with more confidence, join an expedition or a more advanced course.

LOCATION
Glencoe & Fort William (All dates January-March)

The Glencoe Hills and Ben Nevis provide some of the best winter walking and climbing conditions in Britain suitable for the beginner and the expert alike. It is the perfect training ground for mountaineering in the Alps or the greater ranges.

GETTING THERE
Only a short flight from London and the South of England to Glasgow or Inverness Airport, followed by a 2 hour drive or a connection by coach or train. You can go by train all the way via Glasgow to Fort William.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation is booked from the night of your arrival, with instruction starting the following morning.  Check out is normally on the morning of your final day unless you have booked an additional night.  This is booked on a twin or double room basis; however, single rooms will be provided where there is not a member of the same sex to share with.  Single rooms can be requested at an extra cost.

Our price includes all meals (breakfast, packed lunch and a three course evening meal), starting with breakfast on your first morning, through to packed lunch on the day of your departure.  Bar meals can be purchased until 9pm for those wishing to eat at the hotel on the day of arrival.  Additional nights can be booked through Adventure Peaks at a preferential rate.

We use the 3**** Onich Hotel www.onich-fortwilliam.co.uk   one of the best in the area, providing everything you need to relax after a hard day on the hill; large en-suite rooms, comfortable bar, restaurant, and high quality food.

EQUIPMENT
A full information sheet and equipment list is provided on booking.  Technical equipment and boots can be hired through Adventure Peaks.

INSURANCE
Recommended for cancellation and personal belongings.  Available on request.

INSTRUCTION

Course activities normally start at 9am, finishing around 5pm except on the final day when you will finish around 4pm to take account of onward travel.
