Climb Alpamayo a dramatic and beautifully shaped Peruvian mountain.
Background
With its sublimely steep and elegant lines,
Alpamayo undoubtedly deserves its regard
as one of the world’s most beautiful peaks.
Situated in the heart of the Cordillera
Blanca, its impressive fluted ice coat is a
unique spectacle, ranking its coveted peak
alongside Ama Dablam, the Matterhorn and
Khan Tengri. We ascend by way of the
Ferrari Route; this being a regular but no less
classic and challenging technical climb on 45
degree snow and ice.
We arrive in Huaraz and then make our way
along the expansive Ishinca Valley. At its
head,we set up our Base Camp, in an
unrivalled setting below an awesome
panorama of rock, ice and snow. We take
acclimatisation seriously, and take to the
summits of Urus (5423m) and Ishinca
(5530m) in preparation for our final peak.
After a brief return stay in Huaraz, we head
up the famous Santa Cruz Valley to our
second Base Camp. Above this, we tackle an
awkward icefall at Scottish Grade 2, to the
col below Alpamayo’s imposing south west
face. From a second high camp,we move up
the superb line of the Ferrari Route topping
out onto a narrow arête. This leads us onto
the backbone of Alpamayo’s shapely summit and rewards us with stunning views in all
directions, including straight down the
fluted ice slopes below us.
Level of support
This expedition will have a British Adventure
Peaks team leader, and a local guide to aid
logistics and communications. Members of
the team should all be comfortable on
Scottish winter routes of Grade 2/3 or Alpine
AD. We will also use mules to support our
team’s efforts on the lower treks in.
Huascaran extension
We are sure you will be delighted with the
climbing on offer in Peru. To make the most
of this spectacular region you can extend
your adventure by seven days to include an
ascent of Huascarán, Peru’s highest
mountain. This will be in tandem with our
Huascarán expedition; a great opportunity
to mix with another team and share
experiences.
Other Extensions
Amazon
Basin (4 days/3 nights)
To the north the mountains of Bolivia’s
Cordillera Real extend to meet the Amazon
creating a unique eco-system. It is only a
short flight to the Amazon basin where you
will be able to explore the jungle with our
local guide on foot and by traditional boat.
You will have the chance to observe several
species of monkey, crocodiles, turtles and pink
river dolphins together with a spectacular
array of birds and the amazing setting sun.
The more adventurous can go piranha fishing
and swim in the lagoons.
Machu
Picchu (4 days/3 nights)
You can transfer by luxury coach or a short
airline flight to neighbouring Peru for a visit
to the architectural wonders of the ancient
Inca people. You will stay in comfortable hotel
accommodation and have time to explore
Cusco before taking the classic train ride from
Ollantaytambo to experience the unique and
mysterious civilization of Machu Picchu. A
fitting and leisurely end to your expedition.
