Climb Pico Austria, Pyramid Blanca, Pequeno Alpamayo, Illusion, Huayana Potosi and Illamani;
the classic routes of the Bolivian Cordillera Real.
Background
This classic expedition to the Cordillera Real
offers a magnificent setting for the
mountaineer to ascend some magnificent and
shapely peaks. We acclimatize in La Paz and
beside Lake Titicaca, with visits to Inca ruins and
to the Island of the Sun. Acclimatised we trek
into the Condoriri area, described as “truly
fairylike”; pyramidal mountains with pure snow
faces, elegant ridges and fields of penitents. We
warm up on Pico Austria (5100m) and Pyramid
Blanca alongside glacier training before
tackling the elegant and beautiful Pequeno
Alpamayo (5337m). We return to La Paz for a
days rest before tackling Huayna Potosi (6094m), a two day ascent. Finally we move to
Illamani (6462m) our main objective and the
mountain that dominates the skyline of La Paz,
a fitting climax to a fantastic expedition.
Bolivia has certainly lived up to its reputation
for having the most stable and reliable
weather. We have always had the most
wonderful weather allowing us to complete
our full programme of peaks. This expedition
is ideal for those who have completed a
winter mountaineering course, an alpine
course or an expedition such as Mera Peak or
the Ecuador Volcanoes.
Level
of support
The expedition will have a British leader and a local guide/cook.
Mules will help support our journeys into the mountains and Porters
are used to the high camps. Members should be proficient in the
use of crampons and ice axe.
Extensions
Bolivia
offers a wide variety of unique experiences for those who wish
to extend their stay.
Amazon
Basin (4 days/3 nights)
To the north the mountains of Bolivia’s Cordillera Real
extend to meet the Amazon creating a unique eco-system. It is
only a short flight to the Amazon basin where you will be able
to explore the jungle with our local guide on foot and by traditional
boat. You will have the chance to observe several species of monkey,
crocodiles, turtles and pink river dolphins together with a spectacular
array of birds and the amazing setting sun. The more adventurous
can go piranha fishing and swim in the lagoons.
Machu
Picchu (4 days/3 nights)
You can transfer by luxury coach or a short airline flight to
neighbouring Peru for a visit to the architectural wonders of
the ancient Inca people. You will stay in comfortable hotel accommodation
and have time to explore Cusco before taking the classic train
ride from Ollantaytambo to experience the unique and mysterious
civilization of Machu Picchu. A fitting and leisurely end to your
expedition.
Uyuni Salt Lake
(5 days/4 nights)
Visit the largest salt lake in the world, with its moon like appearance
and the amazing Red and Green lagoons, Fish Island and the Valley
of the Cactus. Uyuni has been used many times for filming purposes
including Planet of the Apes.
