Baruntse April 2008 News

30th April Rob and the team are safely back in Namche Bazaar. The dry conditions in the region made the crossing of the Amphulatsa more interesting than usual but they've made good time back down the main Everest trail and are now only a couple of days walk from Lukla

23rd April After the fantastic 100% summit success of last year, Rob and the team have decided to leave Baruntse.  This is due to the extremely lean conditions on the mountains with little snow and the presence of large sections of blue ice making a summit attempt too hazardous.  In contrast, this unusually dry season has proved beneficial on some other peaks, including Everest.  The Baruntse team will look at the possibility of summitting Island Peak on their way out.

20th April This spring Baruntse is very quiet with only one other team from Belgium attempting the South East Ridge. Last winter was very dry and the lack of snowfall is very noticeable. Rob reports plenty of rocks and blue ice showing through. The route to Camp 1 is more involved this year with a couple of large crevasses to avoid but they hope to enter the colouir and establish the camp in the next couple of days.

17th April The team have arrived at Base Camp.  Everyone is well and will spend tomorrow resting before making further progress.

13th April Rob called the office today to say the group have now reached Tang Nag.  They were slightly delayed in Lukla because of the weather but everyone is well and eager to reach the mountain.

5th April After a day spent enjoying the sights and sounds of Kathmandu everyone's looking forward to getting into the mountains. An early morning flight tomorrow will drop them off at Lukla, the starting point for the South side of Everest but from here the team will head south away from the crowds and begin the walk in to Baruntse.

3rd April Rob called from the airport to say everyone had arrived safely and checked in ready for departure.  They will meet up with Andre (from South Africa) in Kathmandu.  We wish them all the best for their expedition and will keep you informed of progress with regular web updates.

19th March Rob & the team will depart from the UK on the 3rd April.
