Baruntse Expedition 14th October 2011 - Expedition News

A spectacular and straightforward 7000m peak. Posted in Current Trips

15th Nov - The team are now down at Lukla, but weather is causing delays with flights again. The team are planning to get a helicopter tomorrow back to Kathmandu.

10th Nov - The team are no re-united at base camp and will start their trek out tomorrow via the Amphulapsa. All being well they will be back in Kathmandu on either the 15th or 16th Nov.

9th Nov - Paddy texted today to say that Mark and Roy reached the summit of Baruntse this morning. Hannah and Ian after a valiant effort decided to turn around at the ice step. They will head back down to base camp tomorrow and rejoin the rest of the group.

7th Nov - Paddy texted today to say that Mark, Hannah, Roy and Ian have gone back up to Camp 1 today with a view to a summit attempt on Wednesday. Eoin has been helicoptered back to Kathmandu after suffering some superficial frostbite, he is fine but it was felt that trekking out over the Ambulapcha could potentially make things worse. The rest of the team are now resting at base camp and waiting for the final summit attempt. The weather is looking good for Tuesday and Wednesday so fingers crossed they'll get it.

4th Nov - Paddy texted today to say that Andrew, Mary, Matt, Eoin, Nicola and Paddy summitted today in good weather but with a very cold wind. The rest of the team started out but turned round with Mark and have descended to base camp to rest up and have another attempt in a couple of days. Paddy and the rest of the group will drop down tomorrow to base camp. Well done to all and good luck on the next summit attempt.

3rd Nov - Paddy called on a very broken line to say the all the team are well and have now reached Camp 2. This afternoon they will discuss their plans for summit attempts.

2nd Nov - The team are now resting at Camp 1 on Baruntse Most of the group will head up to Camp 2 tomorrow.

31st Oct - The team arrived at base camp yesterday and are having a rest day today. They will ascend to camp 1 tomorrow and then decide on a plan of attack for the rest of the week. So far the forecast is looking good through to Saturday.

28th Oct - Mark called in today to say that the team climbed Mera Peak today. Debbie had to turn around after an hour due to cold feet not warming up after setting off. However it's not deterred her from Baruntse. All the team are doing fine and are looking forward to arriving at Baruntse base camp in a couple of days time.

24th Oct - The team are now at Tagnang and will trek to Khare tomorrow. The group are strong and in good spirits, they are looking forward to the ascent of Mera Peak in a few days time.

23rd Oct - All group members are fit and healthy after a great walk yesterday up over the Surke La (pass) in crisp, pleasantly cold conditions. Tomorrow they will start to walk up the main Hinku Valley towards Khote.

16th Oct - The team have arrived in Kathmandu and enjoyed a group meal together last night. Today they have been making final preparations for their expedition, as well as enjoying the sights of Kathmandu. They hope to fly to Lukla tomorrow, weather permitting.

14th Oct - The team will depart the UK for Nepal on the 14th October.

Situated close to Makalu, Baruntse is remote and is at the centre of three glacier valleys, the Imja, the Hunku and Barun. It is objectively safe and offers a tremendously rewarding climb among the world’s highest peaks. Summit day includes spectacular views of Lhotse, Everest and Makalu.

The expedition will approach Baruntse via Lukla, the Mera La and Hinku valley as if going to Mera Peak. We exit via the Ambulapcha Pass past Island Peak and then down the main Everest trail. An optional ascent of Mera Peak is available during the approach to aid acclimatisation.
