For those who wish to visit Machu Picchu, looking for a good trek through the Andes that gets you close to the mountains, but far away from the crowded Inca Trail, here is a chance to really treat yourself to the trip of a lifetime. A series of luxury lodges built along the spectacular Salkantay trail provide the indulgent walker with top quality accommodation every night, set in stunning locations up in the mountains of the Vilcabamba range. With the lodges situated away from the campsites most of the time you will have the trail to yourself. After crossing the 4600m Salkantay pass you descend slowly the warm rainforest zone, climbing again past the Llactapata ruins from where you get a rare view of the fabled lost city of Macho Picchu. A full day is spent visiting the site before returning to Cusco by train and bus with a full day left for your leisure before flying home.
