“One of the hardest parts of expedition is waiting for the weather window.

Today we were treated to the full range of mountain weather, Sun, wind, snow, rain and that was just the morning!

We have checked, checked and checked again the summit kit and technical gear, with all being confident with moving on snow and ice and able to arrest a slip or slide in all positions.

We have gone through every card game and even introduced some of the Russian team to good old British parlour games, with a sing song for our lunch audience.

We are constantly watching for the weather window and asking all and anyone if they have updated information which allows us to practice our newly learnt Russian language.

We are amazed at our cooks ability to rustle up another soup in these conditions. But she does and serves it with a smile.”

October 3rd

“Today we had a late breakfast at 08:00, and now plan to go and practice or skills some more. All team really good and strong. The weather is sunny, but has put down lots of snow last night, approximately 6”.

The food is great, plentiful and tasty. We will be waiting at the Barrels for a weather window.”

October 2nd

“Today, 2nd October we had a 06:30 start to head up to 4500m to acclimatise.

The weather was slightly more dull than previous days. After an hour or so the weather pulled in to typical Scottish winter! The windchill was rather biting but the team made it to 4500 and took a well deserved rest out of the wind. We then descended back to the Barrell’s for late lunch and to dry the gear out from this morning.

The team have rested this afternoon out of what has turned into quite a storm. Jack has taken a lead in the card playing whilst Anthony is enjoying the local cuisine.

Tomorrow is planned to be a rest day, with the first opportunity to summit after that.

“We had a good day today, trekking up to 4000m above the barrels.

All of the team had a strong day with a chance to practice some skills, walking with crampons, using an ice axe, axe arrest.

The team are feeling very buoyant.”

“Today the team had a rather wet start but was able to have a great acclimatisation trek to 3100m. All the team are really strong and team morale is really high.

We got some great photos and some awesome drone footage. We covered 20km and were able to try our new or hired gear out.”

September 28th

Our last Elbrus expedition of the season has arrived safely at the hotel in Cheget, in the beautiful Baksan valley. Here’s the team enjoying a quick snack en route from the airport. Everyone is happy and looking forward to the challenge of climbing Europe’s highest mountain.
