Maromokotro may only stand 2876m high, but it requires a tough 14 day trek through remote and untouched country to climb it.
From Madagasca’s capital - Antananarivo (known locally as Tana), you drive north towards Bealalana, to the remote start of the Trek to Maromokotro.
Bealalana is an interesting destination for travellers wishing to discover an authentic region of Madagascar, rich in natural landscapes and agricultural traditions.
Trek days make full use of the daylight, with a break for lunch under the largest tree you can find as the temperature rises. Nights are truly dark and the stargazers amongst you will love the untainted view of the night sky. As you approach the Tsaratanana Massif, open savanna is slowly replaced with rolling countryside, dense jungle and an amazing moorland standing at over 2000m. There are stunning waterfalls, beautiful rivers and a peace which is difficult to describe.
The peak itself is technically a trek, and was first climbed by the French in 1936. A small cairn sits on the summit, where wonderful views of the island can be seen. you then head out on a different path, under your own steam and on traditional "Pirogue" river craft, through remote villages and farms.
If you want to experience a truly remote mountain, then this is for you…
