Leaders: Mohamed and Stu Peacock
Today we walked up to the pass of Tizi n Tamatert from Imlil. It was very peaceful trekking up through the snow covered pine forest. There has been at least a foot of snow deposited, however today was very much a contrast to yesterday with blue skies and no wind. From the pass we were rewarded with views Tizi n'ou Addi, where we should have trekked over yesterday, had conditions been in our favour. We could also see the village of Tacheddirt.
After a test at the pass and some of Mohamed's amazing trail mix, we headed back down the way we came, then just before reaching Imlil we split off on another trail to Aroumd. We arrived at our Lodge for 3pm, perfect timing for our lunch. In the sunshine.
Last night I introduced the team to Skip-Bo and it seems to have ignited a few competitive flames with Tony demanding a rematch tonight🤣.
So, it was raining reasonably heavily in Marrakech. Which turned to snow when we got higher up towards the turn off for the ski resort. However, the road had been closed by the police, due to the snow conditions. So we had to turn tail and head to imlil. We got as far 1390m, about 7km from imil when we found vehicles couldn't get any further due to the snowy conditions. So, we got ready and started to walk. It only took 2 hours to reach imlil and we were welcomed to an amazing lunch at our hotel. We passed lots of coaches and cars stuck trying to get back down. Mohamed said it's very popular for locals to come for the weekend to imlil.
All being well the 4x4 will make it up later this afternoon. They should be sending a snow plough up this afternoon to clear the road.
I arrived to a very different Marrakech from 2012. It was raining for starters, but there are plenty of new buildings all around, but the city still has that buzz about it. Mohamed and Touria came over and met us at 6:30pm. We discussed the plans for the next few days. There is a lot of snow at the moment and new snow forecast for tomorrow, but if the weather forecast is anything to go by, then it looks like it's getting better🤞🤞. It will mean we will probably have to take a slightly different route than planned from Tacheddirt to Aroumd, but it avoids some known avalanche dangers.
Today, the team will set off for Marrakech. After making our final preparations and kit checks we will head to Oukaimeden on the 18th Jan, where we will begin our trek to Mount Toubkal.
