Mount Elbrus & Mount Damavand Combo Expedition

Mount Elbrus & Mount Damavand Combo Expedition

Altitude 5,642m Grade: 2B

A combo expedition that takes you to the highest volcanoes in Europe and Asia as part of the Seven Volcanic Summit Challenge. The expedition climbs Mount Elbrus from the South and Mount Damavand.

Mount Elbrus & Mount Damavand combo expedition is a new trip for 2018 enabling you to climb two of the Volcanic Seven Summits in one Expedition.

Our standard expedition to climb Mount Elbrus via the south approach has achieved outstanding success rates for people of all levels over the past decade. On this expedition we gradually gain height and increase our chance of success by taking time to acclimatise in the Syltran-Su valley on Mount Mukal, which offers views across the beautiful valleys to Elbrus. Once acclimatised, we use the cable car to regain our high point at just over 4000m from where we follow sweeping snow slopes to the col between Elbrus’ twin summits before continuing easily to the true summit of Europe’s highest mountain in an ascent of about 1000m.

In 2017 99% of our clients reached the summit (72 out of 74 summits). In 2016 100% of our groups reached the summit and 99.5% of clients; 68 out 69 summits! In 2015 all clients (100%) from five of our groups reached the true summit of Elbrus, and 80% on our sixth group. This success is in sharp contrast to what is normally achieved on the Northern approach due to the gruelling summit day. 2016 was the exception on the North side which saw far better success than the norm of 40% due to the incredibly good weather experienced during that season.

For our summit day on Elbrus we rise in the early hours and prepare for a 3.00am departure for the highest point of Europe. It is often possible to obtain a lift by Snowcat (or walk) to around 4500m. The route from here is a steady climb up to the Sedlowina Saddle, the col between the two peaks of Elbrus. From here the final 300 metres of ascent to the West summit is on steeper snow slopes. The ascent is approximately 8-10 hours round trip. Time permitting we will return to our hotel base in the valley to celebrate or spend a further night in the barrels.

We then transfer via Moscow to Tehran fully acclimatised to climb

Mount Damavand is located north of Tehran, close to the Caspian Sea and dominates the Alborz mountain range. Damavand is with its near-symmetrical lines a beautiful and graceful peak that has lain dormant for 10,000 years. On reaching the crater rim you walk around it to the true summit and it is possible to walk into the crater. It is technically easy but demands a good level of fitness.

Insurance

It is essential for a trip of this type that you are adequately insured. When researching insurance options, please ensure the policy covers you for the following:

  • Cancellation or curtailment
  • Helicopter rescue (most insurance companies will no longer cover for ‘search and rescue’ but providing you stay with the group, they will assist with ‘rescue’)
  • Repatriation
  • The altitude that you are expected to attain
  • The location especially when travelling to Antarctica
  • Grade of trek/climb/expedition
  • Medical cover

Adventure Peaks partners with Global Rescue to offer the world’s leading travel protection services. Medical and security emergencies happen. When they do, we rely on Global Rescue to provide our clients with medical, security, travel risk and crisis response services. Without a membership, an emergency evacuation could cost over $100,000. More than one million members trust Global Rescue to get them home safely when the unexpected happens. We highly recommend our clients enroll with Global Rescue, in particular for peaks over 7000m:
