Climb Romania's three highest peaks with superb ridge walking and lakes
The Carpathian Mountain range sweeps down through Romania in an arc that divides the country in two. Our trek concentrates on exploring the Fagaras Mountains, the highest section of the Southern Carpathians, rather than just rushing up the highest peak. Using mountain chalets as bases, we make ascents of the three highest peaks of the Romanian Carpathians; Moldoveanu (2545m), Negoiu (2535m) and Vistea Mare (2527m). We can enjoy some of Europe’s most splendid ridge walks offering excellent views over the valleys and lakes below.
This is a backpacking trek for experienced walkers who are used to narrow paths and exposed ridges. You need to carry all your personal belongings with you (except up Moldoveanu) – but with careful packing your load should not exceed 8kg.

Day 1 | Fly to Bucharest. On arrival you will meet the rest of the group at the airport. Once everyone is assembled a private transfer will take you 150km north to the medieval city of Brasov. If time permits your guide will take you on a short walking tour of the town. |
Day 2 | After breakfast we drive via Bran 'Dracula’s' Castle to Poiana Neamtului, on the west side of the Fagaras Mountain from where we start our trek. This is medium walking, following the access route to the hut through the forested northern slopes of the mountains. This is a basic mountain hut perched on a ridge with outside toilets and showers heated by solar power. |
Day 3 | From the hut we head uphill out of the forest to the crest of the ridge, from where we can expect great views to the north and south. We head east along the main ridge, dropping back down to the Negoiu Chalet refuge at the end of the day. |
Day 4 | A long day where we follow the main ridge of the range to the second highest summit, Negoiu (2535m). Normally it takes about 4 hours to reach the top, making it an ideal place for a picnic lunch if the weather is being kind! We continue along the ridge, crossing over a few other summits, before dropping down to the chalet at Balea Lake. This is a lovely spot with road access so facilities are better and we hope to provide twin en-suite rooms tonight. |
Day 5 | We leave 'civilisation' again and cross the main ridge to visit the delightful Capra Lake. From here we climb to the best viewpoint in the area, Vanatoarealui Buteanu (2507m). We continue eastwards along the ridge to finally reach the small, relatively basic but comfortable, Podragu hut which has great views. Here there is dormitory accommodation, inside toilets and no shower. 5 to 7 hours walking. |
Day 6 | Today is an out and back walk to the summit of Moldoveanu Peak (2545m) visiting Vistea Mare Peak, the third highest peak of Romania, on the way. We can enjoy this relatively short day with a lighter load as we will return to the Podragu hut for a second night, and should have time to relax and chill out here in the late afternoon, looking out for marmots, wold goats and raptors. 6 to 8 hours walking. |
Day 7 | A long but steady walk down a spur takes us north back out of the mountains down to the town of Victoria. From here we transfer back to Bucharest for our final night in Romania, and a celebratory dinner in the evening when you can say farewell to your guide. |
Day 8 | We will arrange a transfer for you back to the airport to connect with your flight home. |
