Roraima Trekking - Angel Falls

Roraima Trekking - Angel Falls

Altitude 2,700m Grade: T3

Visit Conan Doyle’s "Lost World", take a shower at the Angel Falls with quality accommodation and all fees included.

Read the book, seen the movie? – Now go and see it for yourself, but don’t expect to encounter too many dinosaurs! For our Roraima Tepui trek we travel on foot from the Indian settlement of Parai-Tepui through the Gran Sabana grasslands to the base of Roraima Tepui, a seemingly impenetrable fortress surrounded by 800m vertical walls. From our camp at the base of the cliffs, we can enjoy views across the savannah and watch the sun play on the rose coloured cliffs above. A diagonal cleft penetrates the cliffs, allowing us access to the summit via a steep but non-technical trail. We have a full day to explore the bizarre rock formations, fauna and plant life, much of which is found nowhere else on Earth, before retracing our steps back to Parai-Tepui and continuing on by vehicle to Santa Elena.

No visit to Venezuela would be complete without visiting the world’s tallest waterfall, the 1000m high Angel Falls. A charter flight takes us over the Tepuis to Canaima from where we travel by motorised canoe up-river to a jungle camp beneath the falls. There is time at leisure to absorb the views and atmosphere of the falls before returning to Canaima for the night and then on to Caracas and home.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Caracas, where you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Depending on flight schedules, you may continue the same day to Puerto Ordaz and overnight at the Mara Inn Hotel. The remainder of the day is free to relax and recover from your journey.

Day 2

After breakfast, travel south into the spectacular Gran Sabana within Canaima National Park. Arrive at Kumaracapai Lodge in the indigenous Pemon community of San Francisco de Yuruani. In the evening, meet your guide for a trek briefing and preparations for the ascent of Mount Roraima.

Day 3

A transfer takes you to the village of Paraitepui, the starting point of the trek. Begin hiking across open savannahs with magnificent views of Mount Roraima rising dramatically ahead. After approximately five hours of walking, arrive at Tek River Camp for your first night under canvas.

Day 4

Cross the Kukenan River and continue steadily uphill toward the towering cliffs of Mount Roraima. The route passes grasslands, ravines, and wildlife-rich terrain before reaching Base Camp at the foot of the mountain. Enjoy spectacular views of the pink-hued cliffs and expansive savannah stretching into the distance.

Day 5

Follow the historic route first used by explorer Everard im Thurn in 1884. Climb through cloud forest filled with orchids, bromeliads, tree ferns, and waterfalls before emerging onto Roraima’s extraordinary summit plateau. In the afternoon, explore fascinating features including the Abyss, the Jacuzzis, and Maverick Rock before camping in natural rock shelters.

Day 6

Spend a full day discovering the surreal landscape atop Mount Roraima. Wind and rain have sculpted the ancient sandstone into remarkable rock formations, pillars, arches, and giant stone sculptures. The summit's unique ecosystem is home to many endemic plants found nowhere else on Earth.

Day 7

Begin the descent from the summit, retracing your route through the cloud forest and down the mountain. After lunch and a chance to cool off in a nearby stream, continue to Tek River Camp for your final night on the trail.

Day 8

Complete the trek back to Paraitepui and return to the Gran Sabana. Stop in Yuruani to browse local indigenous handicrafts before continuing to Kamoiran Lodge. Along the way, visit the scenic Kama Falls and the colourful waters of Jaspe Creek.

Day 9

Transfer to Luepa Airstrip and board a charter flight to Canaima, including a scenic flight over the region with views of Angel Falls. After lunch, visit the impressive Sapo Falls before overnighting at a lodge in Canaima.

Day 10

Travel by boat through the rainforest to the base of Angel Falls. Enjoy stunning views of the world's highest waterfall from camp and, if desired, take a hike to a nearby viewpoint. Spend the night in a jungle camp, sleeping in hammocks beneath the rainforest canopy.

Day 11

After breakfast, hike to the main Angel Falls viewpoint for unforgettable views of the 979-metre waterfall plunging from the summit of Auyán-tepui. Later, return by boat to Canaima for a comfortable overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 12

Fly from Canaima via Puerto Ordaz back to Caracas. Upon arrival, transfer to the Eurobuilding Express Maiquetía Hotel for your final night in Venezuela.

Day 13

Fly back to the UK.
