Altitude 2,500m Grade: T5/Backpacking

Climb Rysy, Poland’s highest peak enjoying superb 'Alpine' trekking across ridges and lakes.

The Polish High Tatras are one of the most rugged and spectacular ranges in Europe, which separates Poland and Slovakia. There are over 25 summits above 2500m combining dramatic alpine scenery, great lakes, good trails, comfortable refuges and outstanding views. Starting from the picturesque town of Zakopane, we trek hut to hut through these wonderful mountains taking in many summits before a final ascent of Rysy (2499m), the highest mountain in Poland. From the top of this scramble we gain a dramatic 360 degree vista of more than 100 peaks, in both Poland and across the border in Slovakia. The walking on the Tatras trek is hard and tough but very rewarding and beautiful. Finally we visit Krakow, to relax and enjoy the delights of Poland's most fascinating city.

Insurance

It is essential for a trip of this type that you are adequately insured. When researching insurance options, please ensure the policy covers you for the following:

  • Cancellation or curtailment
  • Helicopter rescue (most insurance companies will no longer cover for ‘search and rescue’ but providing you stay with the group, they will assist with ‘rescue’)
  • Repatriation
  • The altitude that you are expected to attain
  • The location especially when travelling to Antarctica
  • Grade of trek/climb/expedition
  • Medical cover

Adventure Peaks partners with Global Rescue to offer the world’s leading travel protection services. Medical and security emergencies happen. When they do, we rely on Global Rescue to provide our clients with medical, security, travel risk and crisis response services. Without a membership, an emergency evacuation could cost over $100,000. More than one million members trust Global Rescue to get them home safely when the unexpected happens. We highly recommend our clients enroll with Global Rescue, in particular for peaks over 7000m:

The Tatras are a beautiful area and the guide was engaging and helpful.

The holiday was great and although the itinerary got changed slightly it was only because of weather and at one point we were high up when there was lightning and thunder and the guide made totally the right decision as to get down as soon as possible. I think he always made the right decisions in terms of what we did in the mountains with stuff like that. If the group had been quicker we could have carried on with original plan but we had to do a group decision. Our guide did everything he could and took the slow persons rucsac to try and help out. On summit day of Rysy we got up early and were able to do it whilst there was not much sun and not so many people so that was a great decision. I certainly don’t mind getting up early on summit days!

It wasn’t till the end that three people mentioned that they thought the pace was too fast. I think they should have said before that if they did. One person was very fast but they always stopped and waited for the group. I was just going at my speed and I think it was a good one for the mountains we were in. In my opinion we did not need to go really slow as we had no altitude to contend with and I felt the same as if I was in the UK in the hills. The guide made sure that the fast person had an itinerary to follow when he wanted to go off and do more things.

So I just kind of wanted to let you know that in my opinion we didn’t go too fast. I enjoyed the trip very much especially as, as you know this was not my first choice of trip. However I will definitely go back to the Tatras as there is just so much to do there.

Probably in hindsight I would have picked different dates and gone in September when it may be less busy as it was holiday time at times it was very busy.

But I had the dates off I had so that really wasn’t an option. I think that the huts were lovely and sometimes we were on the floor inside or sleeping outside, personally I preferred it as the huts were so hot inside it was unbearable.

All in all a fantastic trip, a brilliant guide and a really enjoyable holiday.

My partner and I have just returned from the Trek the Tatras trip. WOW!

This was my first trek with Adventure peaks and I cannot speak more highly of it.

The guides Marta and Maciec were amazing. They told you all about the various mountains and flora and fauna and went through itinerary options every night and morning dependant on weather and how you physically felt.

The accommodation is basic but cosy and with fantastic surroundings and views. The food is out of this world!! Everyday Marta and Maciec ordered us all a different polish dish, and everyone was amazing, and my god there is a lot of it. I think if we weren't eating so much I would of lost another stone!

Now on to the Tatras. I have never seen such a beautiful place, the forest an d mounta ins are spectacular, every mountain is dramatic and is full of crazy drops and ridges.

The walking is incredibly tough, I consider myself a good hill walker but I struggled, even one of our group had done Killi and he thought Killi was much much easier than this, so I do think the grading needs to be looked at. As I did struggle with fitness towards the end, as we all did.

But the views from the mountains are worth the 9 hour days and pain, truly beautiful!

My partner and I cannot wait to go back to the Tatras, and also try out new treks as well.

It has been one of the best trips and holidays both of us have ever had, and I would recommend it to anyone wanting a demanding and rewarding challenge over not too long a period.

Hi Mike, many thanks for a great trip to the Tatras, I am just getting round to thanking everybody. The trek was great, one night under the stars as the hut was overflowing with bodies! We were unable to summit Rysy due to the water running down the rocks and the snow! But overall would recommend the trip to anyone of all abilities.
