Introduction to Navigation Course

Introduction to Navigation Course

From £240
Grade: Introductory
2 instructed days

Our Introduction to Navigation Course gives you a fundamental skill which, once learnt, will greatly increase your enjoyment and safety in the British hills and further afield.

Our courses cover the full spectrum of skills from the basics of setting the map and taking a bearing to fine tuning the abilities of mountain marathon competitors. If you want to know what to do when you’re lost or lack the confidence to explore the hills when the cloud is low then our courses will point you in the right direction!

The navigation course will be based outdoors on the hill to give all members the maximum opportunity to learn and practise new skills. It will be taught in a practical way, starting with the basics and progressing at a rate to suit the group. We will aim to cover some of the following skills:

  • Understand the nature of a map as a two dimensional plan.
  • Understand how to use map symbols and scales, on a variety of maps.
  • Take a 6 figure grid reference for any given position and also locate such a reference on the map.
  • Orientate the map with and without a compass.
  • Use the orientated map to identify land features and indicate direction of travel.
  • Choose simple navigation strategies and routes.
  • Use linear features (e.g. paths and tracks) as handrails in simple navigation exercises.
  • Estimate distance on both map and ground.
  • Using a basic understanding of contours, match major landforms like hills and valleys to their map representation.
  • Plan a safe, suitable walk.
  • Relocate using simple techniques on paths and other handrails.

Please do NOT book your own accommodation and make travel arrangements until you have verified that the course is guaranteed to run.

Nathan was excellent. You could ask anything and feel at ease. No question was a silly question.

He kept as well briefed and informed of everything plus he kept us together as a team and lead us perfectly. I was really impressed by the way the course was structured.

There was the theory and information needed, then practical exercises, using it and refining what was learnt. It was also all outside rather than in a stuffy classroom.

What a great course!.

The Intro to Navigation course was amazing. Informative, educational but most of all fun. Nathan is a great instructor with tons of knowledge, experience and patience. He made the course fun and the information just sank in no problem. Thank you Nathan and adventure peaks for a great weekend and my knew skills and confidence.

Weather is perfect-really enjoyed the course and will be a great benefit to me. Nathan was a likeable, informative guide and an asset to adventure peaks as a company!!

Nathan was super-just right for our course and our level. The course was just right in terms of distance and difficulty and being local was a bonus. He was a great guide/tutor. He recognised and ability or lack of it and wanted to suit teh course to that. What was good was his ability to keep the conversation going about wider topics and not just the route we were on.

Nathan was concise but informative and explained things on each individual's level. Taking time to ensure people were happy in their understanding. He was very patient.

The topics covered in his dialogues were on button and well explained. With all the areas we walked fitted well the requirements of our course content. The distances were practical and sensible, and well timed for the duration of the course. The training obviously helped us understand how to translate our new found knowledge of terrain, to map, and vice versa.

When I made the initial enquiry, no one was available but the lady who answered the phone was still extremely helpful. No improvements as this was first class, we will be using you again. Excellent all round.
Jasmine and i had a fabulous time. learn to be expected to learn. we will be back for sure. First-class experience with you.

A fantastic course led by an excellent instructor. He never let us feel stupid if we give the wrong answer if we went on the wrong path! It was all taken as an excellent opportunity for further learning. I feel as though I achieved a lot in just two days. I would like to follow the possibility of having it recognised as the NNAS problems. And I am definitely thinking of looking at other courses and expeditions with Adventure Peaks - thank you!
