Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival (H)

Arrive early in Ljubljana for your transfer to your hotel for the week. You will meet your guide here and go through your equipment, to ensure you are ready for the course. Arriving early also means it gives you plenty of time to explore and experience Kranjska Gora, while gathering your lunch items for the coming days.

Day 2 – Movement Skills and First Summit (Nad Šitom Glava) (H) (B)

Start the course by getting used to winter mountaineering movement — revising how to move efficiently with crampons, use an ice axe for balance and self-arrest, and move safely on mixed snow and rock terrain. Once you’re comfortable, we’ll head up Nad Šitom Glava (2087 m), a perfect first peak to apply what we’ve learned. It’s a short climb with great views and a good introduction to the conditions we’ll face during the week.

Day 3 – Avalanche Awareness and Rescue Practice (H) (B)

Today is all about understanding the mountain environment in winter. We’ll spend the day near the mountain hut, learning how to read avalanche forecasts, recognize terrain traps, and manage group travel in avalanche-prone areas. This day builds the awareness and habits that keep us all safe in the mountains and is an essential part of snow and ice climbing in any setting.

Day 4 – First Alpine climb (Mala Mojstrovka) (H) (B)

We’ll put our movement skills into practice on a longer, classic winter climb — Mala Mojstrovka (2332 m). The route offers straightforward snow and ice, ideal for refining technique and efficiency. We’ll travel as a team, focusing on pacing, route choice, and simple ropework. Expect a full on but rewarding day in a beautiful alpine setting.

Day 5 – Ice Climbing Techniques (Prisojnik Area) (H) (B)

After a few days on snow and easy ice, it’s time to get vertical. We’ll head to the frozen waterfalls below Prisojnik, where the ice conditions are normally excellent. The day covers basic ice climbing techniques — tool placement, footwork, body positioning, and building safe anchors. The guides will set up top ropes so everyone can focus on movement and confidence.

Day 6 – Steeper Ground (Uroševa Grapa or Triglav Option) (H) (B)

By now, you’ll be comfortable moving on snow and ice, so we’ll tackle something a bit steeper — Uroševa grapa, a fine gully offering sustained ice and snow climbing in spectacular alpine terrain. We’ll look at efficient rope management, placing protection, and communication on longer routes. If conditions and motivation are good, there’s also the option to attempt a winter ascent of Triglav (2864 m) via the normal route — a serious but achievable objective for the end of the week. If you wish, it is also possible to revisit the ice falls to refine your ice skills and take on some short, but harder climbs. The day can be easily tailored to each group.

Day 7 – Final Route and Course Wrap-Up (Zupančičeva Grapa) (H) (B)

For our last day, we’ll aim  to climb Zupančičeva grapa, another classic gully that brings together everything you’ve learned — steady movement, decision-making, and teamwork. It’s a satisfying way to finish the course, and the route usually offers excellent snow and ice. Back at the hotel, we’ll debrief, review individual progress, and discuss next steps for those who’d like to continue into more advanced alpine climbing.

Day 8 – Departure

After a hearty breakfast, take your transfer back to the aiport in plenty of time to get your return flight home.

  • The location especially when travelling to Antarctica
  • Grade of trek/climb/expedition
  • Medical cover
