Slovenian ice

From £2,400
Grade: Intermediate
6 Mountain Days Guide Ratio: 1:2

For those with previous winter climbing experience who want to improve their skills, push their grade or join one of our Advanced level Expeditions graded 4 or 5 such as: Ama Dablam, Annapurna 4, Khan Tengri, Alpamayo.

Experience the best of winter climbing in the Slovenian Alps — consistent ice, dramatic scenery, and world-class instruction. Over several days, you’ll progress in your snow, ice and mixed climbing ability with our UIAGM-certified guides: mastering movement on ice, efficient tool use, safe rope techniques and efficient belay building. The week builds toward a memorable finale (conditions and ability permitting) — a winter ascent of Triglav’s north face, Slovenia’s highest peak.

Previous Experience

You need good basic winter skills and the ability to use crampons and technical ice axes safely and effectively on grade II/III routes. You should have a good level of fitness allowing you to enjoy good long winter mountain walks with a minimum of 3500ft / 1200m of ascent over a mixture of terrain including exposed broken rocky ground in ascent and decent If you wish to build up to this course, then consider joining our Scottish Winter Mountaineering (level 2 Introductory) course or, more appropriately, our Slovenian beginners ice climbing course

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

Arrive early and meet your transfer at Ljubljana airport, for your journey to Bled. Spend the day preparing your food for the coming days and exploring this lovely Slovenian town.

Overnight: Bled hotel

Day 2 – NW Ridge of Begunjščica (II)

We’ll begin the week with an ascent of the Northwest Ridge (SZ greben) of Begunjščica (2060 m) — a fine, easy alpine route that offers mixed climbing on snow and rock with great exposure. It’s a good warm-up to refresh crampon and rope technique.

Overnight: mountain hut (B, D)

Day 3 – Greben na Možeh (II) – Ridge Climbing and Rappelling Practice

Today’s climb, Greben na Možeh, is a classic ridge route offering continuous movement on easy rock and snow with several short rappels. It’s an excellent route to develop rhythm on alpine ridges, build efficiency on transitions, and practice managing a rope team in exposed terrain.
Overnight: Bled Hotel (B)

Day 4 – Teranova Smer, Dolgi Hrbet (III)

A full alpine day. Teranova Smer on Dolgi Hrbet (2240 m) is a beautiful snow and mixed route, offering sustained but enjoyable climbing at grade III. Expect a long approach and descent, so we’ll start early and spend most of the day on the mountain. The line provides great opportunities to refine protection placement and rope management on real terrain.
Overnight: Kranjska Gora hotel (B)

Day 5 – Ice Climbing on Prisojnik Icefalls (Desni Slap, IV

We’ll spend the day climbing ice routes below Prisojnik Mountain, focusing on efficient technique on vertical ice and multi-pitch systems. Our main objective will be Desni Slap (Right Icefall), graded around IV — steep, sustained, and excellent for improving precision and movement.
If we plan to climb in the north face area, it’s possible to stay in the winter room the night before to shorten the approach (the road is closed several kilometres below in winter, requiring a 9.5 km walk into the valley).
Overnight: mountain hut (B, D)

Day 6 – 7 Open Itinerary

On the next 2 days, we have many options to consolidate and celebrate your learning.

One of the options for these days in the north face of Mt Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak. One of the most rewarding climbs in the Julian Alps. A long, committing alpine climb involving mixed ground, ice and snow up to grade IV.
This is a big day out, combining route-finding, movement efficiency, and teamwork on steep alpine terrain. The goal is to apply all the techniques developed over the week in a serious but achievable objective.
Overnight: mountain hut (day 6) (B,D), Hotel (Day 6) (B)

Day 8: Departure (B)

After a hearty breakfast, your transfer will take you to the airport in time for your flight home.

  • The location especially when travelling to Antarctica
  • Grade of trek/climb/expedition
  • Medical cover
