Climb Mount Kilimanjaro - Lemosho Route

From £2,880
Altitude 5,895m Grade: T4

To climb the Lemosho route on Kilimanjaro you will trek across the remote Shira plateau and enjoy 8 days on the mountain to maximise your acclimatisation and summit chance.

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route

Make no mistake; this is a once in a lifetime experience to savour and enjoy, and remember for years afterwards.

All our Kilimanjaro routes have been carefully chosen both to improve your enjoyment through acclimatisation and also for your safety. We at Adventure Peaks do not believe it is wise to spend any less than 6 days on the mountain for the simple fact that we want our clients to feel good both mentally and physically and to reach their goal – the ‘roof of Africa’. Each route we offer has its own quirks and we encourage you to check our website or contact our experienced staff to help you decide which trip is perfect for you. Yes, every extra day on the mountain costs, but it helps retain our success levels of more than 99% for clients to the true summit of Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak – and it will cost a lot more to come back for a second attempt!
All flights are to Kilimanjaro airport avoiding the overland journey to and from Nairobi. And finally we include ALL PARK FEES in our prices.

The Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route is the longest of our routes to climb the mountain, designed for those of you who have the time and really want to maximise your chances of summiting. It approaches the mountain from low down in the pristine rainforest on the western side, emerging and crossing the World Heritage site of the Shira plateau. Skirting the southern face of Kibo, the views of the summit icefields and back to Mawenzi are stunning, and a climb to the Lava Tower (4600m) on the 4th day makes for excellent and valuable acclimatisation. The infamous Barranco wall provides excitement on the 5th day, with the ascent to Stella point on the 7th day providing an easier approach to Uhuru Peak than via Gillmans. Descent is via the Mweka route.

This route is a must and makes a great trek in its own right and may appeal to those not too worried about achieving the dizzy heights of 5895m and happy to stay at camp for a lie-in on summit day!

The departure date is based on an overnight flight departing the UK in the evening and arriving the following day at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Some same-day flights may be available but the overnight flight allows you to arrive earlier in the day giving you more time to recover from the flight before heading up the mountain.

Itinerary

Days 1 - 2

Overnight flight to Kilimanjaro International airport. On arrival in Tanzania, you will be met and transferred to the hotel. Situated in a quiet location in the foothills of Kilimanjaro this is a pleasant and friendly hotel with restaurant and bar.

Day 3

After breakfast we meet our local guide before leaving for the drive to Londorossi Park Gate (3hrs) to register. We then drive a short distance before starting our trek along forest roads and trails to MtiMkubwa (big tree) campsite. You may see Black and White Colobus and Blue Monkeys on the way. Climb 600 metres walking time: 3 to 5 hours.

Day 4

Today we continue as the trail gradually steepens and enters the giant heather moorland zone. After several streams are crossed we continue over the Shira Ridge then gently downwards to Shira 1 camp located by a stream on the Shira Plateau. Climb 800 metres, descend 100m: walking time: 5 to 7 hours.

Day 5

After breakfast, a gentle hike across the plateau followed by some easy ascent leads to Moir camp at the head of a wide valley by a stream. The Shira Plateau is a World Heritage Site and as you look back you will be rewarded with spectacular views across to Mt Meru. The camp is set amidst a typical upland moorland landscape below a south facing cliff. Climb 600 metres; walking time: 5 to 7 hours.

Day 6

This stage, quite tiring at first, explains why hikers starting on this route suffer the altitude less on the final stage to the Kibo summit. Zigzagging up and down is, on any mountain, the best way to get acclimatised. In the morning you ascend on good tracks to the Lava Tower (4600m), joining trekkers on the Shira and Mweka routes part way up.  High up, in the distance are the walls of the Western Breach. Once at the ridge at the base of the Lava Tower a rather steep descent leads to the Barranco Hut (3950 meters), a splendid viewpoint of the Breach Wall and the Heim and Decken glaciers. Climb 500 metres; descend 650 metres, walking time: 7 to 8 hours.

Day 7

A short but spectacular day which gives an ever changing vista of the summit. You start by crossing the valley and scrambling up the Barranco wall by a series of easy rock ledges. Once at the top a broad, rocky ridge traverses around the mountain with wonderful views of the Heim glacier. A short sharp descent past some amazing rock formations leads down into the Karanga Valley (4000m) and the final climb to your campsite. Climb 250 metres; descend 200 metres, walking time: 3 to 4 hours.

Day 8

The final short stretch of the approach follows a rocky wind-beaten ridge close under the south flank of Kibo and crosses a large desolate bowl before climbing up onto the obvious ridge to the Barafu Hut (4600m) and our camp. Climb 600 metres; walking time: 3 to 4 hours.

Day 9

Leaving our camp just after midnight a good path marked by stones climbs the rocky slopes and into the wide gorge to the right of the Rebmann glacier. A section on the more friable ground (nothing like the screes of Gillman's Point on the normal route) precedes the last slopes, sometimes covered with snow. Once out on the crater at Stella Point (5795m) you continue on round to Uhuru Peak (5895m). To descend, we drop back scree slopes to Barafu for a rest and an early lunch and then continue down for a further four hours to Mweka Camp, delightfully situated in the trees, and celebrate! Climb 1295 metres; descend 2795 metres, walking time: 10 to 14 hours.

Day 10

A fully refurbished trail  takes you down through the forest  to the park gate (1500m) and the bizarre sight of vehicles which will transfer you back to the comforts of your hotel in time for lunch. The afternoon is free to buy souvenirs and try your hand at haggling with the local shopkeepers.  Descend 1600 metres, walking time: 3 to 4 hours.

Day 11

Usually there is some time to visit town in the morning before transferring to the airport for your flight home. (Sometimes flights used will get you back home the same day).

Day 12

Arrive back in the UK.

Insurance

It is essential for a trip of this type that you are adequately insured. When researching insurance options, please ensure the policy covers you for the following:

  • Cancellation or curtailment
  • Helicopter rescue (most insurance companies will no longer cover for ‘search and rescue’ but providing you stay with the group, they will assist with ‘rescue’)
  • Repatriation
  • The altitude that you are expected to attain
  • The location especially when travelling to Antarctica
  • Grade of trek/climb/expedition
  • Medical cover

Adventure Peaks partners with Global Rescue to offer the world’s leading travel protection services. Medical and security emergencies happen. When they do, we rely on Global Rescue to provide our clients with medical, security, travel risk and crisis response services. Without a membership, an emergency evacuation could cost over $100,000. More than one million members trust Global Rescue to get them home safely when the unexpected happens. We highly recommend our clients enroll with Global Rescue, in particular for peaks over 7000m:

My local guide was amazing especially on summit night, he understood that I was dealing with the altitude really well and had us set off two hours later than everyone else. As the other trekkers were spread out by that time it made it easy to pass people and small groups. When we reached the summit before anyone else that was just the icing on the cake!

[Our leader was] 5 star and I could not fault him. Kind and perfectly balanced individual. The highlights were the scenery, the people, the walk, the post-walk beer, the summit and the overall experience.

Everything went to plan. Good trip...I was fed better on the mountain than at home. Three courses every meal

They looked after us very well, were well organised and prepared to 'go the extra mile' to ensure that we all had the experience of a lifetime. Alice was a great help and source of information. Two Guides: Felician and Sanjay - both SUPERB. I cannot praise them enough!! Felician was very professional, experienced and a very good leader. An experienced, knowledgeable, organised and friendly guide is very important. Felician was all of these. A true asset to the team. The achieving of a lifetime goal - the Roof of Africa via a well organised, well led, well-planned, friendly Guides and excellent team of Porters. Thank you to all involved.

I thought the whole experience was excellent. Nathan was an excellent leader, very approachable, likeable and importantly enthusiastic, which helped keep us motivated. Loved the whole experience, Barranco Wall/Camp was my favourite day.

The adventure was great, with good support from the AP staff, the whole training weekend and advice before the trip being part of the package sets AP apart from other people, responsible party sizes and abilities, means everybody has a great time safely...I feel this trip was made better to a massive degree due to the presence of an AP staff member with us...happily everybody got along very well with each other.
We did hear that the other AP group that were there at the same time had pizza and garlic bread one night on the mountain and that would have been awesome!
[Our leader Nathan] was a pleasure to have along with the group, keen to learn and impart knowledge and experience. Nathan got along with the whole group, whilst managing to maintain a professional distance. I feel having him along greatly enhanced the overall experience for all of us.

The trek instructions and kit list were very comprehensive. Albert was also an excellent guide, very experienced very good local mountain knowledge. The assistant guide was also very professional and went out of his way to help a few of the guys who needed support due to minor illness and injury-both highly recommended. The Lemosho route allowed the full team to acclimatise which was excellent. Hugely varied and interesting scenery. Excellent personal tent tent and mess tent provisions.

Fantastic service and the local team could not have been any better, they were superb. We are looking forward to booking our next trip with yourselves.

I just wanted to write a quick email to say thank you for all your help with our trip.

We both reached the summit at 6am on the morning of Friday 13th Feb.

We both had an amazing time and I cannot thank or speak highly enough of the team of guides, porters and cook which we had. They were all incredibly hard working and lovely people and without them we would not of made the top.

Also thanks again for your help in allowing us to put the trip back when my girlfriend lost her job.

I have received your feedback form which I will fill in and post tomorrow.

We would be very much interested in doing some future trips with yourselves and the Aconcagua expedition looks extremely appealing.

A massive thanks again

The trip exceeded all my expectations, and could not have gone better. Carrie is a world-class guide and loves to chat and keep morale high. Her quality and strength shone through on summit night when she got a bug but still put an exhausted team member first to ensure his safety.

Alex N · 10 years ago ·

The Kilimanjaro - Lemosho trip was beyond my expectations and imagination. Everything went smoothly and I felt very well looked after. Special thanks to Carrie who did a fantastic job, wish you was my guide on every seven summit mountain!

Neil · 13 years ago ·

We had an excellent trip and very well lead. Thanks!
